Schengen 90/180 Rule for UK Citizens After Brexit

Until 31 December 2020, a British passport was an EU passport. You could live, work and wander the Schengen Area without counting days. That is over. UK nationals are now visa-exempt short-stay visitors: at most 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Area. The people this hits hardest are not weekend city-breakers. They are the ones with a flat in Alicante, a habit of three months in the Dordogne, or a job that used to mean hopping Eurostar twice a month.

For UK travellers

  • Visa: not required for short visits (tourism, family, business meetings).
  • Limit: 90 days in any 180, whole Schengen Area — not 90 per country, not 90 per calendar year.
  • A Spanish or French holiday home does not add days.
  • Ireland is outside Schengen. Days there do not count, and they do not reset the clock.
  • ETIAS will be required once it is mandatory; it is not a visa and it does not extend the 90 days.

What changed at the end of free movement

Free movement was a right of residence. The 90/180 rule is a visitor cap. Mixing the two is how people overstay without meaning to: they still think “I can spend the winter in Spain if I go home for Christmas.” You cannot, unless a Spanish long-stay visa or residence permit says otherwise. Dual UK–EU citizens should travel on the EU passport when they enter Schengen as EU nationals; the 90/180 rule is for third-country visitors, which a British-only passport now is.

Work, even remote work for a UK employer while you sit in Lisbon, is not what visa-free entry is for. If you need months, not weeks, use a national type D visa or that country’s digital-nomad route — not a second tourist stamp.

Eurostar, Le Shuttle, and the day you “enter”

French and Belgian passport control for the tunnel happens in the UK. The day you clear it is a Schengen day, even if the train is still under Kent. A same-day return to London still uses two days if you re-enter on a later date; a day trip that leaves and returns on the same calendar date uses one day (entry and exit on the same date still counts as presence that day). Add every tunnel crossing to a 90/180 calculation the same way you would add a flight to Palma.

Ireland, Gibraltar, and the myths that waste days

Example: Dublin is not a Schengen reset

You spend 70 days in France, fly Dublin for a fortnight, then fly Dublin–Amsterdam. Ireland is not Schengen, so the fortnight does not add to the 70. It also does not erase the 70. Amsterdam is a new Schengen entry with about 20 days left in the current window — not a fresh 90.

Example: Gibraltar into Spain

Gibraltar is outside Schengen. Walking or driving into Spain is an external-border crossing. If you have already used 90 days in France and Italy, the Spanish officer can refuse entry even though you “only popped over from Gib.” Time in Gibraltar does not create a new allowance.

A European street typical of long UK second-home stays
Owning property in France or Spain does not change the visitor cap. The stay is still counted in the Area-wide 90 days.

ETIAS for British travellers

Once ETIAS is mandatory, UK nationals apply online before travel. It is a pre-screening linked to the passport, not a visa, and not extra time in Europe. Do not confuse it with the UK ETA that visitors to Britain use. Apply only on the official EU site. Details: ETIAS basics.

How to use a 90 day rule Europe calculator as a Brit

Search Console queries such as “90 day rule europe calculator” are mostly this audience: people who used to not count, and now must. Enter every Schengen stay in the last six to seven months — including Eurostar days, a weekend in Bruges, and a long layover that passed French border control. Set the next arrival. Read the maximum continuous stay. If you are planning the winter in a holiday home, run the last day of that winter before you book the outbound.

This is general information for UK passport holders, not immigration advice. Dual nationals, settled residents, and people with pending Spanish or French applications should confirm their status with that country’s authorities.

Frequently asked questions

Can British citizens still live in Spain or France for six months a year?

Not as visitors on a British passport. The cap is 90 days in any 180 across Schengen. A holiday home does not add days. Longer stays need that country’s long-stay visa or residence permit.

Does time in Ireland or Gibraltar reset my Schengen 90 days?

No. Ireland days do not count toward the 90 and do not wipe days already used. Gibraltar is outside Schengen; entering Spain from Gibraltar is a Schengen entry.

Does Eurostar or Le Shuttle count as entering Schengen?

Yes. Control is completed in the UK before you board. That calendar day is a Schengen entry day.
