About SchengenStay.EU

SchengenStay.EU is an independent website built around one job: helping visitors work out how long they can legally stay in the Schengen Area under the 90/180-day short-stay rule. It pairs a free calculator with a library of plain-language guides on the rule, overstays, the Entry/Exit System, ETIAS, and the routes to staying in Europe longer than 90 days.

Who runs this site

The site is run by a small independent team with a background in web development and travel research. It is a personal project, not a law firm, a government body, or an immigration consultancy. We are not affiliated with the European Union, the European Commission, or any member state, and we do not represent or advise on individual immigration cases.

For editorial questions, corrections, or partnership enquiries, contact us at info@schengenstay.eu or through the contact page.

How the calculator works

The calculator implements the same rolling-window method used by the European Commission's official short-stay calculator:

  • Dates are handled as whole calendar days in UTC, so time zones do not shift a count.
  • Overlapping or back-to-back past trips are merged before counting.
  • For each candidate day of a planned stay, the tool checks the 180-day window ending on that day and confirms the total Schengen days do not exceed 90.
  • The maximum stay is the last day before that check fails.
  • If no days are available on the entry date, the tool searches forward for the first date the window drops below 90 — the earliest re-entry date.
  • Entry and exit days are both counted as full days, in line with the Schengen Borders Code.

The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Trip dates you enter are stored in your device's local storage for convenience and are not transmitted to us or anyone else. You can remove them at any time with the Reset all button.

Our editorial standards

  • Primary sources first. Guides are written from official EU and national government material — the Schengen Borders Code, European Commission pages, the official EES and ETIAS sites — which we link at the foot of each article.
  • Dated and versioned. Every guide shows a "last updated" date. Where a rule has a moving timeline (the EES and ETIAS rollout, for example) we say so rather than stating a date as settled.
  • No guarantees. We explain the rule and the arithmetic. We never tell a reader they "will" be admitted or that a specific plan is "safe" — border officers make the final decision.
  • Corrections are welcome. If you spot an error, email us with the detail and a source. We review factual corrections promptly and update the page and its "last updated" date.
  • Clear separation of information and opinion. Where we describe common traveller strategies (such as alternating Schengen and non-Schengen time), we present them as what people do, with the risks stated, not as advice to follow.

How the site is funded

SchengenStay.EU is free to use. We intend to cover hosting and development costs through advertising and, in future, may add optional paid tools. Advertising, where present, is clearly distinguishable from editorial content, and advertisers have no influence over what our guides say. Our privacy policy and cookie policy explain what third-party services this involves and how to control them.

Limitations

This site is general information, not legal or immigration advice. It cannot account for your nationality's specific rules, prior immigration history, visa conditions, dual citizenship, or exceptional circumstances. For anything consequential — a long planned stay, a past overstay, a residence application, a refused entry — consult the official sources for the relevant country or a qualified immigration adviser.
